The spacebar and directional keys are strangely located, which might necessitate a learning curve for some users.
* This is a pretty raw phone. Basic features like MMS and portrait mode aren't supported; MMS won't be a big deal for many users, but being forced to use the N900's non-phone functions in landscape is a pretty big deal.
* The N900 may have a "good" resistive touchscreen, but it's still a resistive touchscreen, which means it's not going to be as finger-friendly as it could be -- we were repeatedly disappointed by how much pressure was required to actuate scrolling gestures in menus, for example. Thing is, the N900 is a device where we can see many (if not most) users still preferring to have access to a stylus from time to time for precision input, and that being said, this is probably about as good of a resistive display as Nokia is capable of manufacturing.

The bottom line? We'll hold back on final judgment until we use a review unit, but our initial swipe at this thing has us ready to drop a "for early adopters only" stamp on it -- for your average consumer just looking for an effective smartphone, it seems like it's got too many quirks and functionality holes to recommend.

Source

Samsung B7330 OmniaPRO preview: First look

Introduction

Samsung have just released their B7320 OmniaPRO and now, just a few short weeks later, they are introducing the B7330 OmniaPRO. Some might think there is something wrong. To get straight to the point, there’s nothing wrong with the B7320 OmniaPRO. But who are we to frown at an upgrade.

Now, that’s where it gets a bit tricky. First of all, it’s not a major upgrade involving a lot of investment and effort. Plus, the two handsets will perhaps coexist peacefully serving different markets. Still, a few nice little touches make the new B7330 OmniaPRO a real treat. The newcomer is slimmer, has brilliant ergonomics and is quite keen to double its predecessor’s data speeds and boost screen size and resolution.

Samsung B7330 OmniaPRO official photo

And the big news of course is Windows Mobile 6.5. We guess the release of the B7330 OmniaPRO is meant to herald the OS upgrade rather than send the B7320 into oblivion. Actually, the latter – along with the other current Omnia handsets running the earlier 6.1 version of the OS – will at some point be upgradeable to WinMo 6.5 anyway.

Having cleared that up, we can now get on with our first look at the cute Samsung B7330 OmniaPRO. Cute may sound a bit odd for a business device, but the handset does look and feel great, and is so wonderfully compact that we couldn’t think of any other word to describe it. So, it’s a brand new WinMo powered QWERTY messenger that’s keen to serve and please the eye. Sounds worth a closer look, doesn’t it?

Samsung B7330 OmniaPRO at a glance:

General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/1900/2100 MHz, EDGE class 10, HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 2 Mbps

Form factor: Full QWERTY bar phone

Dimensions: 114.9 x 59 x 10.8 mm, weight 107 grams

Display: 2.62" 65K color TFT display, 320 x 320 pixels, remarkable sunlight legibility

Platform: 528 MHz processor

OS: Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard

Memory: 270MB storage, 256 MB RAM, hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 32GB)

Camera: 3.15-megapixels auto-focus camera, geotagging, QVGA@30fps video recording

Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS

Misc: Office document viewer and editor

Battery: 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery

The Samsung B7330 OmniaPRO at ours

As you can see, there are some differences compared to the B7320 but they aren't that significant. However, what has been changed has been changed for the better, so now the screen sports some more pixels and real estate, there’s Windows Mobile 6.5 right out of the box, boosted up HSDPA and HSUPA, and a beefier battery.

Last but not least, the B7330 OmniaPRO has lost some weight and got thinner (the device measures 114.9 x 59 x 10.8 mm and weighs only 107 g) and is now much closer to the famous <leo_highlight style="border-bottom: 2px solid rgb(255, 255, 150); background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; cursor: pointer; display: inline; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial;" id="leoHighlights_Underline_0" onclick="leoHighlightsHandleClick('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" onmouseover="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOver('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" onmouseout="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOut('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" leohighlights_keywords="nokia e71" leohighlights_url="http%3A//thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/highlights/keywords?keywords%3Dnokia%20e71">Nokia E71</leo_highlight> or RIM’s BlackBerry devices. Comparing the B7330 to the E71 and the BlackBerry gang is no surprise since all these devices share similar features and perhaps potential users.

Anyways, enough talking, let's get down to it. Jump on as we explore what the B7330 OmniaPRO is made of, followed by a brief rundown of the interface.

Samsung W880 AMOLED 12M preview: First look

Introduction

The Samsung W880 ups the ante with a world's first 12 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom. Featuring a hardware Mode dial and a real zoom lever it does feel like a real camera and you may find yourself struggling to find the mobile phone under the digicam skin. Now while W880 is South Korea bound only, it's enough to give us a taste of what's coming in the shape of the rumored Samsung M8920, which should make it our way sometime next year - but with Wi-Fi and GPS on board.

Samsung SCH-W880 AMOLED 12M official photos

Designing a mobile phone (or any other portable gadget for that matter) is a balancing act - the engineers must juggle between cost, size and features, all the while being limited by the current state of technology.

Say cost doesn't matter - that still leaves only so much that can reasonably be crammed into a mobile device. Progress is made, technology advances, which results in things getting cheaper, smaller and with more features. And quite soon, things that seemed impractical a few years back can now be released as a consumer device.

This is how the Samsung W880 AMOLED 12M came to be - it contains all the mechanical elements of a point-and-shoot camera, but still has enough room left for the phone parts. It's not the first phone to achieve that but it's the first 12-megapixel one and the added 3x optical zoom and xenon flash pretty much put it on par with a typical point-and-shoot camera.

The Samsung W880 has some high-end imaging functions too - tracking touch autofocus, 720p@30 fps video recording, 3.3" big AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with WVGA resolution. That's not something you see every day on a cameras and it's top notch in mobile phone terms. Even the degree of control over how a photo is taken beats out consumer cameras, let alone cameraphones.

Now, keep in mind that the we're previewing a prototype here and it's a prototype of a phone meant for the South Korean market only and although it has tri-band GSM and support for UMTS, those are meant for roaming only - the AMOLED 12M is for South Korea and South Korea only.

So, why bother with a preview then? Well, there's a global version coming in the beginning of next year and that might actually land in a store near you. It will look just the same but will drop the T-DMB TV receiver, which has little use outside of South Korea anyway, swapping it for the more practical Wi-Fi and GPS. Supposedly, the global GSM version will be allegedly called Samsung M8920, but that has yet to be confirmed by an official source.

Samsung W880 AMOLED 12M live shots

In this preview we focus mainly on the camera - admit it, it's the most interesting aspect of the Samsung W880 and it's the camera that has us holding our breaths.

For now, we'll just concentrate on the essentials - we take a look at the hardware, next we have a video walkthrough of the interface and finally, we focus on the camera, with plenty of still photos and video samples.

Toshiba put K01, K02 and L02 on display at CEATEC 09 in Japan

A leaked Toshiba roadmap several months back mentioned several new smart devices planned. Up until now we had no idea how they would look, but Toshiba went ahead and displayed their prototypes at the CEATEC show currently held in Japan.

Though the rumored TG02 and TG02 were not on display, the Toshiba K01 was showcased. Running on WinMo 6.5, it has the same form factor as Nokia N900 for example, with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. It's only 15mm thick (18mm for N900) and has a 4.1-inch WVGA capacitive display and a 3 megapixel camera. The Toshiba K01 should be announced before the end of the year.

The previously leaked Toshiba roadmap • Toshiba K01

The Toshiba K02 was also on display at the CEATEC 2009. With a detachable QWERTY keyboard, K02 is a clamshell with a main 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen display and an external secondary screen. The K02 runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 much like the K01. The Toshiba K02 should be announced in January 2010.

Toshiba K02

The last of the bunch is Toshiba L01 - a 7-inch touchscreen tablet. The display has a WVGA resolution and the operating system is again WinMo 6.5. The L01 has a detachable QWERTY keyboard (optional, but visible on the photo). The Toshiba L01 should be announced in Q4 2009.

Toshiba L01

Toshiba also went ahead and demonstrated another device that's still unnamed. The TransferJet technology lets you easily transfer data among different types of devices (phones, PCs, notebooks, etc.) by simply touching the two gadgets. The maximum transfer speed is surprisingly high - up to 200Mbps. Toshiba even went as far as demoing the tech live using a notebook and a modified TG01.

<a onclick="'javascript:ShowImg(" Google for a lot of of things. Things like: finding mp3,videos,books as a calculator, as a dictionary, Google Reader for the Rss Feeds of your favorite blogs, Gmail for your e-mail and off course last but not least as a search engine. BUT did you know that you can use Google to quickly convert currencies?? Well, I didn’t till I found this great tip on Achmad Z’s Archives!

So if you want to know how much 250 Euro’s is in US dollars you just type:

250 EUR in USD

And Google will tell you how much that is in US dollars, namely: $ 389.95 just like the screenshot here below.

Drop Your Mobile Phone or Ipod in Water?

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Hackers use them to gain control of a computer so that they can press-gang it into sending spam or downloading more malicious software, such as a keystroke logger, which can record credit card details and passwords typed in by the user.

Anti-virus (AV) software monitors a computer for signs of a virus, such as chunks of telltale code. To fight back, hackers write new viruses that use different code, or bury the code deeper in the operating system where the AV software isnt programmed to look. So AV firms and hackers are locked in an arms race, continually trying to outdo each other.

Soon hackers could up the ante even further. Samuel King and his colleagues at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have shown that they could also gain control of a computer by adding malicious circuits to its processor. Because these circuits interfere with the computer at a deeper level than a virus, they effectively operate below the radar of AV software.

To evaluate the risk from such hardware, Kings team designed their own malicious circuits. They used a processor called a field programmable gate array (FPGA), whose logic circuits can be rearranged, to create a replica of an existing open source processor called Leon3, which contains around 1.7 million circuits. They then added about 1000 malicious circuits not present in Leon3.

The team observed that the circuits allowed them to bypass security controls on Leon3 in a similar way to how a virus hands control of a computer to a hacker, but without requiring a flaw in a software application. When they hooked the FPGA up to another computer, they were able to steal passwords stored in its memory and install malicious software that would allow the operating system it was running to be remotely controlled. Once you have this mechanism in place, you can do whatever you want, says King, who presented the work at the Large-Scale Exploits and Emergent Threats conference in San Francisco last month.

Sneaking malicious hardware onto a chip is not as easy as installing a virus. The attacker must either have access to a chip during its design or manufacture, or be capable of manufacturing their own chips, which they would then have to sell to computer makers, or slip into computers during assembly. Its not something someone would carry out on weekends, says King.

Nonetheless, computer scientist Simha Sethumadhavan of Columbia University in New York says that chips and their design processes are becoming more complex, making it easier for a hacker to infiltrate. Recently, some Apple iPods and Seagate hard drives were found to have been sold with viruses pre-installed, demonstrating their vulnerability, says King.

Nokia E71 and Nokia E66

Two new mobile phones coming pretty soon which are called the Nokia E71 and the Nokia E66, the question has to be “Are these two new mobile phones the one for you?

Both the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 will boast 3.2 megapixel cameras, 128MB of memory, secondary video call cameras and looking at the phones some sort of cool styling. I have had no official information sent to me as of yet so let me tell you what I do know.

Nokia E66

Nokia E66

Below there are some photos just to tease you, the Nokia E66 is a cool slider handset which sports very large keys on the panel at the front and the main keyboard, the size of the display is somewhat distant and not known at this time but trust us we will find out sooner or later, we are judging it will be 16M TFT. The Nokia E66 is apparently being aimed at the enterprise market, as said above it will have a 3.2 megapixel camera and a second camera for those video calls over a 3G network, other features will include Wi-Fi connectivity and also HSDPA enabled plus a very loud speaker, microSD card of up to 8GB in capacity Bluetooth and the E66 will act as a navigation device with international maps and GPS.

Now moving onto the Nokia E71 which is a high end mobile phone which comes in monoblock form factor, you know like a BlackBerry, the E71 will feature a full QWERTY keyboard, QWERTY keyboard, very large “space” key and what we can see is that the D-Pad looks pretty much the same as the Nokia E61i. This phone will also have a 3.2 MP camera with auto focus, self-portrait mirror, flash and much more.

Nokia E71

Nokia E71

Obviously we have not got the full specs as of yet but we will keep you posted. Apple has been known for clearing out its inventory of a certain product ahead of a major upgrade.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris declined to comment on reasons for the shortage and on Apple's plans for an update to the device, which is widely expected to be unveiled in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The paucity of iPhones for sale in some markets comes as Apple is hustling to meet its goal of selling 10 million of the hybrid iPod-cell phone-Internet surfing gadgets by the end of 2008. So far, Apple has sold 5.4 million iPhones, according to the latest data as of the end of March.

One way Apple's expanding the iPhone's reach is by inking deals with wireless carriers around the world, even breaking with its pattern of requiring exclusivity to sell in a certain country.

On Monday, four mobile providers in the Asia-Pacific region announced partnerships with Apple to bring the iPhone to their regions later this year.

SingTel will sell the gadget in Singapore, Bharti Airtel Ltd. in India, Globe Telecom Inc. in the Philippines and Optus in Australia, the companies said in a brief joint statement, without giving details.

SingTel owns Optus and holds a 30.5 percent stake in Bharti and 44.5 percent in Globe.

SingTel has about 2.3 million mobile subscribers in Singapore and around 7 million in Australia, according to data as of Dec. 31, 2007. Bharti currently has about 64 million subscribers, while Globe reported a 21.3 million mobile subscriber base for the quarter ended March 31.

Last week, the top mobile phone operator in Latin America, America Movil SAB, also announced plans to deliver the iPhone to its region. America Movil has 159.2 million subscribers in 16 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.

In recent weeks Apple has also signed deals with Rogers Communications Inc. to sell the device in Canada; Milan-based Telecom Italia SpA to sell the iPhone in Italy; and Vodafone Group PLC, the world's biggest mobile company by sales, to sell it in a total of 10 countries, including Australia, India, Italy and Turkey.

Until the spate of the latest deals, Apple adhered to its policy of exclusivity with one carrier in each country.

The exclusive deals for the iPhone were with AT&T Inc. in the United States, O2 in Britain, T-Mobile in Germany and France Telecom's Orange wireless arm in France.

Industry observers say some people may be holding off on buying an iPhone until the much-rumored next-generation of the device is launched, and the phone is officially rolled out in more countries.

It takes some technical gymnastics, but it's still possible to get the phone in some markets where Apple doesn't have arrangements with wireless carriers.

Many of the phones sold so far have been bought legitimately in one country, modified to work on any cellular network, and resold in countries where Apple doesn't have agreements to sell the iPhone. The trend expands the iPhone's reach but deprives Apple of some of the subscriber fees that Apple splits with its carrier partners.

Another knock against the iPhone's current design is that it works over so-called 2.5G networks instead of the faster 3G, or third-generation, cell phone networks, which are popular outside the U.S. The difference in performance is similar to a dial-up Internet connection versus a high-speed broadband connection.

Apple's chief executive, Steve Jobs, has said Apple went with the slower cellular technology because the chips for 3G networks were too bulky and power-hungry when the iPhone was being designed, and because the iPhone automatically switches to faster Wi-Fi networks when they're available.

The next generation of iPhones is expected to work over 3G networks, which makes tasks like downloading videos easier.

Apple is also planning a software update for this summer that makes the iPhone work better with corporate e-mail, a necessary upgrade to help the iPhone compete with Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry and Palm Inc.'s Treo smart phones.

Girding for a fight with Apple in the business-oriented smart-phone space, Research In Motion on Monday unveiled the Bold, its first BlackBerry model to work over 3G, helping its shares climb to an all-time high of $143.08. The stock closed Monday up $9.20, or 6.9 percent, at $141.97.

Apple shares closed up $4.71, or 2.6 percent, at $188.16

Samsung’s New Digital Camera NV24HD

Samsung has Unveiled a New Digital Camera NV24HD.
